Alaska Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Alaska Board of Nursing (Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing)

Last reviewed July 2026 · verify current rules with the board before relying on them

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial); APRN license and prescriptive authority renew biennially with the license (12 AAC 44.440(e), 12 AAC 44.470).

Total CE hours

Continued competency model on the underlying RN license: before each biennial renewal, complete 2 of 3 methods — (a) 30 contact hours of CE, (b) 30 hours of uncompensated professional activities, (c) 320 hours of nursing employment (12 AAC 44.600-44.630). APRN renewal additionally requires current national certification for each role/population focus (12 AAC 44.470).

Pharmacology CE

15 contact hours in advanced pharmacology and clinical management of drug therapy within the 2 years preceding application are required for prescriptive authority (12 AAC 44.440(b)(2)); the board's APRN application enforces this and prescriptive authority renews biennially. For renewal, 12 AAC 44.470(2)(B) requires current national certification indicating completion of the CE mandated by that certifying body plus a prescriptive-authority renewal application. Contact hours used for initial licensure may not be reused for renewal unless licensure was within 180 days of the renewal deadline (44.440(g)).

Controlled-substance CE

APRNs with controlled-substance authority who hold a DEA registration must attest to at least 2 hours of CE in pain management and opioid use and addiction during each licensing cycle, and be registered with the Alaska PDMP (12 AAC 44.470(5); 12 AAC 44.445(i)).

Good to know

Verified from the board's official August 2025 statutes-and-regulations compilation. Alaska is not an APRN compact state for practice purposes (RN compact only, and Alaska is not an eNLC member). CE vendors commonly describe the 15 pharmacology hours as a per-renewal requirement; the regulation ties it to the prescriptive-authority application and to certification-body CE at renewal — plan on 15 pharm hours per 2-year cycle to be safe. The 2-hour opioid/pain CE applies to any DEA registrant, including PMHNPs prescribing stimulants or benzodiazepines.

Cover your Alaska requirements with 115 contact hours of practical psychopharmacology — including 75+ pharmacology contact hours. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.
