Build your Alaska renewal checklist →Renewal cycle
2 years- Licenses renew every 2 years (biennial).
- The APRN license and prescriptive authority renew biennially with the license (12 AAC 44.440(e), 12 AAC 44.470).
Total CE hours
Varies- Alaska uses a continued-competency model on the underlying RN license: before each biennial renewal, complete 2 of these 3 methods (12 AAC 44.600-44.630):
- 30 contact hours of CE
- 30 hours of uncompensated professional activities
- 320 hours of nursing employment
- APRN renewal additionally requires current national certification for each role and population focus (12 AAC 44.470).
Pharmacology CE
15 hours- Prescriptive authority requires 15 contact hours in advanced pharmacology and clinical management of drug therapy within the 2 years preceding application (12 AAC 44.440(b)(2)).
- The board's APRN application enforces this, and prescriptive authority renews biennially
- At renewal, you need current national certification showing completion of the certifying body's required CE, plus a prescriptive-authority renewal application (12 AAC 44.470(2)(B)).
- Contact hours used for initial licensure may not be reused for renewal unless licensure was within 180 days of the renewal deadline (12 AAC 44.440(g)).
Controlled-substance CE
2 hours- APRNs with controlled-substance authority who hold a DEA registration must attest to at least 2 hours of CE in pain management and opioid use and addiction during each licensing cycle (12 AAC 44.470(5)).
- They must also be registered with the Alaska PDMP (12 AAC 44.445(i)).
Good to know
- Alaska is not an APRN compact state for practice purposes (RN compact only, and Alaska is not an eNLC member).
- CE vendors commonly describe the 15 pharmacology hours as a per-renewal requirement; the regulation ties it to the prescriptive-authority application and to certification-body CE at renewal. Plan on 15 pharmacology hours per 2-year cycle to be safe.
- The 2-hour opioid/pain CE applies to any DEA registrant, including PMHNPs prescribing stimulants or benzodiazepines.

This guide is informational and not legal or licensing advice. National certification (e.g. ANCC PMHNP-BC: 75 CE hours per 5 years including 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours) and the one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training may apply in addition to state requirements.

The PMHNP CE Program, by Psychopharmacology Institute, is continuing education built around psychopharmacology: 115 CME contact hours, including 75+ pharmacology hours — the category state boards and certifying bodies actually require of prescribers. Every publication is available as video, audio in your podcast app, and text summaries with key points.
Content is taught by academic faculty, focused on real-world prescribing, and free of commercial bias. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.
