Renewal cycle

2 years
  • The RN license renews every 2 years, by April 30 of odd-numbered years.
  • Missouri now issues an APRN license (it replaced the former 'Document of Recognition'). The APRN license expires on the earlier of your RN license expiration or your national certification expiration, so keeping both current keeps it active; if it lapses, reinstatement (including a fingerprint background check) is required.

Total CE hours

None
  • Missouri requires no CE hours for RN license renewal.
  • The Missouri APRN license requires only continuous maintenance of national certification (send recertification evidence to the Board) - your certifying body's own CE/recertification requirements apply (e.g., ANCC for PMHNPs).

Pharmacology CE

None
  • No pharmacology CE is required for routine renewal.
  • Pharmacology matters only when obtaining controlled-substance prescriptive authority (20 CSR 2200-4.100), which requires:
    • An advanced pharmacology course with preceptorial experience (300-clock-hour preceptorship), OR 45 CE units of pharmacology within the preceding 5 years
    • Plus 1,000 hours of practice before controlled-substance authority may be delegated

Controlled-substance CE

None
  • No recurring state controlled-substance CE requirement for renewal.
  • Controlled-substance prescriptive authority must be delegated by a collaborating physician in a written collaborative practice arrangement (RSMo 335.019; 20 CSR 2200-4.100). 2025 legislation made only targeted expansions (e.g., Schedule II prescribing for hospice patients); Missouri APRNs do not have a full independent-authority pathway.
  • DEA registrants: one-time 8-hour federal DEA MATE Act training, and Missouri BNDD registration is required.

Good to know

  • Missouri is a no-state-CE state: the pharmacology requirements (including the 45-CEU option) are an eligibility pathway for controlled-substance authority, not a renewal obligation.
  • PMHNPs simply keep the RN license current and recertify nationally.
