Renewal cycle

2 years
  • Licenses renew every 2 years (biennial).

Total CE hours

Varies
  • No single flat CE total for APRNs — the operative recurring hour requirements for NPs are the prescriptive-authority CE below.
  • APRN licensure renewal requires maintaining current national certification in role/population focus.
  • The underlying RN license renews via one of several 'continued qualifications for practice' options per Board guidelines.
    • Examples: CE hours, national certification, or practice hours

Pharmacology CE

15 hours
  • APRN-CNP/CNM/CNS with (supervised) prescriptive authority: 15 contact hours (or 1 academic credit hour) in pharmacotherapeutics, clinical application and use of pharmacological agents every 2 years (59 O.S. §567.4a(4); Board Form RS-24).
  • Independent prescriptive authority (HB 2298, effective 11/1/2025): 40 hours of Category I CME (any topic) every 2 years instead.
  • CRNAs: 8 hours of advanced pharmacology related to anesthesia.

Controlled-substance CE

2 hours
  • 2 hours of education in pain management OR 2 hours in opioid use/addiction every 2 years, required to renew prescriptive authority (both supervised and independent tracks).
    • Waived only if the APRN demonstrates to the Board that they do not hold a federal DEA registration

Good to know

  • Key recent change: HB 2298 (effective Nov 1, 2025) created independent prescriptive authority with a different CE track.
    • Independent track: 40 hrs Category I CME + 2 hrs pain/opioid
    • Supervised track: 15 hrs pharmacotherapeutics + 2 hrs pain/opioid
  • ACLS/PALS/CPR do not count toward prescriptive-authority CE.
  • Oklahoma is an NLC (compact) state for RN licensure, but APRN recognition is state-specific.
  • Applies equally to PMHNPs; pharmacology hours must be applicable to the specialty/population served and prescriber-level.

This guide is informational and not legal or licensing advice. National certification (e.g. ANCC PMHNP-BC: 75 CE hours per 5 years including 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours) and the one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training may apply in addition to state requirements.

Cover Your Oklahoma Requirements

The PMHNP CE Program, by Psychopharmacology Institute, is continuing education built around psychopharmacology: 115 CME contact hours, including 75+ pharmacology hours — the category state boards and certifying bodies actually require of prescribers. Every publication is available as video, audio in your podcast app, and text summaries with key points.

Content is taught by academic faculty, focused on real-world prescribing, and free of commercial bias. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.

"The lack of commercial bias in this program gives me peace of mind." — program member
