2 years- Licenses renew every 2 years (biennial).
- RN/APRN licenses expire October 31 of odd-numbered years.
Total CE hours
30 hours- APRNs with prescriptive authority: 30 actual contact hours of CE during the 2 years preceding renewal, from a nationally approved sponsor of nursing CE (848 IAC 5-1-3).
- No CE required for the RN license or for APRN licensure without prescriptive authority.
Pharmacology CE
8 hours- 8 actual contact hours of pharmacology within the 30 hours, per renewal cycle — required to renew prescriptive authority (848 IAC 5-1-3).
Controlled-substance CE
None- No current requirement — the former 2-hour opioid prescribing/opioid abuse CE for Indiana Controlled Substance Registration expired July 1, 2025 (IC 35-48-3-3.5)
- CSR applicants and renewals after that date no longer need it
- Renewal of prescriptive authority still requires a current collaborative practice agreement.
- The federal one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training applies separately to DEA registrants.
Good to know
- CE is entirely tied to prescriptive ('legend drug') authority, not the base license — an APRN without prescriptive authority has no state CE requirement.
- CE certificates are not uploaded at renewal, but random audits target APRNs with prescriptive authority.
