North Dakota Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial)

Total CE hours

12 contact hours of CE every 2 years for the underlying RN license; APRN renewal also requires maintaining current national certification (which supplies the general competence requirement). APRN contact hours may be counted toward the RN 12-hour requirement.

Pharmacology CE

15 contact hours in pharmacotherapy related to the APRN's scope of practice every 2 years, required for APRNs with prescriptive authority. Certificates must specifically itemize the pharmacology content (UpToDate activity certificates are not accepted for this requirement).

Controlled-substance CE

No North Dakota state-specific controlled-substance/opioid CE requirement identified on the Board's renewal CE page; the federal one-time 8-hour MATE Act training applies to DEA registrants.

Numbers confirmed directly from the ND Board of Nursing CE page. The 15 pharmacotherapy hours attach to prescriptive authority, so a prescribing PMHNP needs them each biennium; certificates must break out pharmacology hours. Retain CE certificates for at least two renewal cycles for audit.
