2 years- Licenses renew every 2 years (biennial).
Total CE hours
12 hours- 12 contact hours of CE every 2 years for the underlying RN license.
- APRN renewal also requires maintaining current national certification, which supplies the general competence requirement.
- APRN contact hours may be counted toward the RN 12-hour requirement.
Pharmacology CE
15 hours- APRNs with prescriptive authority need 15 contact hours in pharmacotherapy related to their scope of practice every 2 years.
- Certificates must specifically itemize the pharmacology content.
- UpToDate activity certificates are not accepted for this requirement
Controlled-substance CE
None- North Dakota has no state-specific controlled-substance/opioid CE requirement for renewal.
- The federal one-time 8-hour MATE Act training applies to DEA registrants.
Good to know
- The 15 pharmacotherapy hours attach to prescriptive authority, so a prescribing PMHNP needs them each biennium.
- Certificates must break out pharmacology hours.
- Retain CE certificates for at least two renewal cycles for audit.
