2 years- Licenses renew on a 2-year cycle; all Montana nursing licenses renew by December 31 of even-numbered years.
Total CE hours
None- Montana requires no CE contact hours for LPN, RN, or APRN license renewal — the Board of Nursing repealed the former 24-hour requirement effective November 2023 (MAR Notice 24-159-93).
- APRNs must instead maintain national certification and engage in ongoing competence development (ARM 24.159.1469).
Pharmacology CE
None- No pharmacotherapeutics CE hours are required for APRNs with prescriptive authority; the former 12-of-24-hour rule was repealed effective November 2023.
- Prescriptive authority renews with the license (application and fee, ARM 24.159.1468).
Controlled-substance CE
None- Montana imposes no state controlled-substance CE requirement for APRN renewal.
- The federal one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training still applies to DEA registrants.
Good to know
- Under ARM 24.159.1469, APRNs must document ongoing competence development and retain records for at least 5 years — but no hour counts apply.
- National certification maintenance (e.g., ANCC PMHNP-BC: 75 CE hours per 5 years including 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours) supplies the ongoing education requirement in practice.
- Montana participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact for RN licensure.
