Montana Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial; licensing period runs Jan 1 – Dec 31 of the following year, staggered even/odd years)

Total CE hours

24 contact hours per 2-year licensing period (same total for RN, LPN, APRN; dual RN/APRN licensees meet only the APRN-level requirement). APRNs must also maintain national certification.

Pharmacology CE

12 of the 24 contact hours must be in pharmacotherapeutics for APRNs holding prescriptive authority (ARM 24.159.1468/1469); no more than 2 of these 12 may cover herbal/complementary therapies.

Controlled-substance CE

No Montana-specific opioid/controlled-substance CE mandate for renewal; federal one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training applies to DEA registrants (since June 27, 2023).

Good to know

Numbers confirmed directly from the Board of Nursing's official CE FAQ (read in full): 24 contact hours per 2-year period; if prescriptive authority is held, 12 must be pharmacotherapeutics. Pro-rated at 1 hour/month for partial licensing periods. CE not needed as proof at renewal but subject to random post-renewal audit. Montana is an NLC compact state for RN, but APRN licensure is state-specific. Applies equally to PMHNPs (majority of hours should relate to the specialty certification).
