2 years- APRN licenses renew every 2 years, by June 30 of odd-numbered years.
- The CE reporting period runs July 1 of an odd year through June 30 of the next odd year.
- Your underlying West Virginia RN license renews on its own separate cycle and must stay active.
Total CE hours
24 hours- 24 contact hours per 2-year renewal cycle:
- 12 hours in pharmacotherapeutics
- 12 hours in clinical management of patients
- Compliance is verified electronically through CE Broker.
Pharmacology CE
12 hours- 12 contact hours in pharmacotherapeutics per 2-year renewal cycle — half of the 24-hour total.
- Under the Board rule (WV19CSR7 6.1.b), 8 of the 12 pharmacotherapeutics hours may be applied toward renewal or reinstatement of prescriptive authority (WV19CSR8).
- Some sources also cite an additional 15 pharmacology hours tied to limited prescriptive authority — that reflects older rules; the Board's current 12 + 12 structure is the standard.
Controlled-substance CE
3 hours one-time- One-time 3 hours of CE in drug diversion, best-practice prescribing of controlled substances, and opioid-antagonist training.
- Required within the first year of licensure for APRNs who prescribe, administer, or dispense controlled substances.
- A waiver is available for those who do not handle controlled substances.
Good to know
- Older references to a separate 15-hour pharmacology requirement for prescriptive authority appear to reflect superseded rules — treat the 12-hour pharmacotherapeutics figure as current.
- Your West Virginia APRN license depends on an active West Virginia RN license.
