West Virginia Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial); APRN license renews by June 30 of odd-numbered years (CE reporting period July 1 of odd year through June 30 of next odd year). Underlying WV RN license renews on its own separate cycle and must stay active.

Total CE hours

24 contact hours per 2-year renewal cycle: 12 hours in pharmacotherapeutics + 12 hours in clinical management of patients. Compliance is verified electronically through CE Broker.

Pharmacology CE

12 contact hours in pharmacotherapeutics per 2-year renewal cycle (half of the 24-hour total). Some secondary sources also cite an additional 15 pharmacology hours tied to limited prescriptive authority under older rules, but the Board's current education page states the 12+12 structure; 8 of the 12 pharmacotherapeutics hours may be applied toward prescriptive-authority renewal/reinstatement per secondary sources.

Controlled-substance CE

One-time 3 hours of CE in drug diversion, best-practice prescribing of controlled substances, and opioid-antagonist training, required within the first year of licensure for APRNs who prescribe, administer, or dispense controlled substances (waiver available for those who do not handle controlled substances).
