Idaho Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial); renew by August 31 of odd-numbered years (per Idaho Code 54-1411)

Total CE hours

None as fixed CE hours for APRNs — state CE requirement was eliminated effective the 2023 rules (IDAPA 24.34.01, eff. 3-28-23). APRN renewal requires: current RN license, evidence of current national APRN certification, and participation in a Board-acceptable peer review process. (RN renewal continued competency: 100 practice hours OR 15 contact hours of learning activities per 2-year period.)

Pharmacology CE

None. The former requirement of 30 contact hours including 10 hours of pharmacology for prescriptive authority was removed in the 2023 rule rewrite; current IDAPA 24.34.01 contains no pharmacology CE requirement (verified in the current rule text). National certifying bodies' own pharmacology CE requirements still apply for certification maintenance.

Controlled-substance CE

None state-mandated. No opioid/pain-management CE requirement in the current Board of Nursing rules; DEA-level federal requirements (MATE Act) apply separately to controlled-substance prescribers.

Good to know

Important recent change: many CE-vendor sites still list the outdated 30-hour/10-pharmacology requirement. The current official rule (read directly, effective 3-28-23) requires only RN licensure + national certification + peer review for APRN renewal — the Board deemed state CE duplicative of national certification maintenance. All APRNs in Idaho have full prescriptive/dispensing authority without extra CE. Idaho is an NLC compact state for RN; APRN license is separate.
