Renewal cycle

2 years
  • CNP licenses renew every 2 years (biennial).
  • Your CNP license expiration is tied to your South Dakota RN license renewal period (ARSD 20:62:02:05).

Total CE hours

None
  • No CE contact-hour requirement for CNP renewal — South Dakota also has no CE requirement for RN renewal.
  • To renew, you need two things (ARSD 20:62:02:06):
    • An unencumbered South Dakota RN license or privilege
    • Evidence of current national certification in your role and population focus

Pharmacology CE

None
  • No state pharmacology-specific CE requirement.
  • The state defers entirely to national certification maintenance — for example, ANCC PMHNP-BC recertification includes its own pharmacotherapeutics requirements, but that is the certifier's rule, not South Dakota's.

Controlled-substance CE

None
  • No state opioid or controlled-substance CE requirement for APRN license renewal.
  • The federal one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training still applies if you hold a DEA registration.

Good to know

  • CNPs licensed before June 26, 1996 are exempt from the certification-evidence requirement.
  • The 1,040 practice-hours rule sometimes cited for South Dakota relates to removing the collaborative-agreement requirement (full practice authority), not to renewal CE.
  • South Dakota is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state for the RN license underlying the CNP license.

This guide is informational and not legal or licensing advice. National certification (e.g. ANCC PMHNP-BC: 75 CE hours per 5 years including 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours) and the one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training may apply in addition to state requirements.

Cover Your South Dakota Requirements

The PMHNP CE Program, by Psychopharmacology Institute, is continuing education built around psychopharmacology: 115 CME contact hours, including 75+ pharmacology hours — the category state boards and certifying bodies actually require of prescribers. Every publication is available as video, audio in your podcast app, and text summaries with key points.

Content is taught by academic faculty, focused on real-world prescribing, and free of commercial bias. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.

"The lack of commercial bias in this program gives me peace of mind." — program member
