Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial); licenses expire March 1 of the renewal year

Total CE hours

10 continuing education hours in the preceding 2 years for license renewal (applies to LPNs, RNs, and APRNs) per 216-RICR-40-05-3 §3.5. APRNs must also maintain national certification in their role/population focus (e.g., PMHNP).

Pharmacology CE

None found in the current regulation. The current text of 216-RICR-40-05-3 contains no pharmacology-specific CE hour requirement for APRNs with prescriptive privileges. (Several CE-vendor sites still cite an older requirement of 30 hours of pharmacology CE every 6 years for prescribers; that language does not appear in the current RICR text as fetched.)

Controlled-substance CE

No opioid/pain-management CE requirement appears in the current nursing regulation. Vendor sites reference legacy content mandates (e.g., 2 hours substance abuse within the 10 hours; one-time 1 hour Alzheimer's) that were not found in the current regulation text. RI prescribers with controlled substance registrations should confirm any RIDOH controlled-substances CE separately.
