Nebraska Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

• APRN licenses renew every 2 years, expiring October 31 of even-numbered years.

• No state CE-hour quota under current law. NP renewal instead requires (Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-2319; 172 NAC 98-006):
  • Documentation of at least 2,080 hours of NP practice within the 5 years immediately preceding renewal
  • Proof of current national certification in the NP clinical specialty
• The often-cited '40 contact hours with 10 in pharmacotherapeutics' comes from the repealed 172 NAC 100 and stale vendor summaries — the current statute contains no CE-hour requirement or CE substitution pathway.

• No pharmacotherapeutics hour requirement exists in the current statute (38-2319) or regulation (172 NAC 98).
• The '10 of 40' figure comes from the repealed chapter 100 rules.

• NPs who prescribe controlled substances need at least 3 hours of CE biennially on prescribing opiates, including one-half hour covering the prescription drug monitoring program (Neb. Rev. Stat. § 38-145).
• This statutory requirement applies through renewals until the statute terminates January 1, 2029.
• DEA registrants: one-time 8-hour federal DEA MATE Act training in addition.

• NPs must show at least 2,080 hours of NP practice in the 5 years preceding renewal plus current national certification; there is no CE substitution pathway in the current statute or regulations — practitioners short on hours should contact the DHHS Licensure Unit.
